Hymns and Herds

Monday, September 11, 2017

Glimpse a pioneer family through music and images.

Dr. Tom Morain combines two of his passions—piano and Iowa history--in this intriguing window into Iowa’s frontier past. “Hymns and Herds” takes the audience through a year in the life of an Iowa pioneer family through photographs from the 1850 Farm at Living History Farms.

Join the Independence Public Library in welcoming Dr Morain for this presentation in our community at the Independence Senior Center Monday, September 11 @ 1:30 pm.

The slide show images depict scenes of how Iowa families divided the heavy workloads necessary for survival in the state’s log cabin era. On piano, Morain will accompany with lively adaptations of well-known 19th-Century folk hymns. Following the formal presentation, Morain will engage the audience in a discussion of how scenes from the past offer new insights into the strengths and challenges of today’s family life.

Sponsored by Humanities Iowa, this program is free and open to the public. For more information, please contact the Independence Public Library at 319-334-2470, iplprograms@gmail.com , or visit Facebook.
